Froyo named as next major Android update

If you were under the impression that the next major update to Android would be named Flan, think again. Google has been naming their Android updates after some tasty dessert treats with an alphabetical naming sequence. Don’t worry, Google’s not deviating at all, they just thought that Flan didn’t please their pallet just right. On this weekends recording of the Engadget show, Erick Tseng let slip that the next major Android release will be called Froyo (that’s short for “Frozen Yogurt”). Erick did not reveal what new updates will be included or hint at a possible release date. If we do the math and stipulate that Google will release their next update on the same schedule as the past three, Android Froyo could launch as early as late April or early May.

And the HTC Hero, Samsung Galaxy and loads of other Android phones will never see this on their phones…
I agree that many of the current phones on the market will not see the Froyo update, but I still can’t get over how people feel it is their right to get an update.
Don’t get me wrong, I own the original G1 and I’d be pissed if 1.6 end up being the last update that my handset gets, but I would completely understand. No mobile phone (besides the iPhone) has never gotten more than 1 or 2 major ROM updates.
Last year when HTC announced the Touch Diamond2 and Pro2, they specifically made it a point to tell people that they would be upgrading to WM6.5 when it was released. Before that, only a handful of HTC devices got an update to WM6.1 and almost no other manufacturer bothered to give their customers an upgrade. So why do Android owners feel like they are entitled to an update when it’s something that has never been commonplace in the past?
Purely and simply because we all bought the phone on the premise that it could be updated on a regular basis, such was the beauty and draw of Android. I have a G1 too which I love, but I want more and more from it, that’s why I bought it, so I didn’t get bored over the year that I would have to have it before upgrading…
I wouldn’t mind the lack of updates if the manufacturers provided the source for their drivers, then the community would help itself.
Simple. If the hardware can support the update, i expect the update to be available for my phone. If not, i understand. And thats the dealio.
