Motorola betting on Android to turn downward trends upward

If you keep up with most tech news, you might have heard that Motorola is in dire straits and needs a lifeline to stay afloat. It’s really hard to imagine how such a dominant player in the communications industry could be hurting so bad. Motorola was one of the first companies to ever create a mobile phone and they will forever be know as the maker of the Motorola RAZR (one of the most sold handsets in history). But the past few years, Motorola has been struggling to maintain mind-share of customers who are looking for new handsets. Motorola is still rolling out new phones, just as they always have, but they have struggled to produce a product that captures the consumer’s imagination for a while. Fortunately, Motorola has realized that something needs to be done to boost their brand and have chosen Android to guide them back to success.
Google Trends paints a good picture of how far Motorola has fallen. To put things in perspective, we’ve compared Motorola’s search volume index to Android and HTC (the largest Android supporter to date). In the past year HTC mind share has greatly increased with their introduction of Android phones. As Android support grows in the marketplace, more and more consumers will start demanding greater varieties of Android phones and Motorola will be poised to take advantage of the opportunity. Over the next year Motorola should be able to turn around their downward trends by latching on to Google’s Android OS with their new Motorola Milestone (Droid) and Motorola Dext (Cliq).
